I had seen Los muertos
before filming with Lisandro, then later I was able to see his first film, La libertad
. In the case of Los muertos
, I not only saw it more than once, but I recommended it to the Danish actress Ghita Norby, who worked with us on the new film, and many other friends. Los muertos
, like Lisandro's other works, has a very personal style. At first glance I felt - even without knowing him personally at that time - that this story was a genuine artistic expression of an exceptional director. I think that Lisandro is allergic to lies in his movies, unless it´s a shameless, naked lie. In his films he´s always honest with the rhythm, aesthetics and the narrative thread.
I met Fabian through Gustavo Lopez, who edited the book Antología de la nueva poesía argentina
, which we published at Perceval Press in 2009. Fabian is one of the poets included in that collection. As we are both half sick Cuervos
, we became friends right away. Although it was not only because of that: we realized from the start that we had similar tastes with regard to literature, film, philosophy and, in general, the absurd side of life. I think that, in his poetry, Fabián resembles Lisandro in something essential: conveying without embellishment the particular beauty of his creative point of view. The two have a process that seems to look for distillation, the essential thing in their stories, without fear of contradiction or unanswered questions. It is one thing wanting to achieve this sort of cleanliness as an artist and another to be able to convey it with grace and originality. Those who can do that, who can move you with what they are telling you, are few.
The team's journey to create the character I play in the film was very special. Dinesen is a man who seems to cope well with loneliness, but finally he becomes lost in it. He goes out in the desert trying to find his daughter, but in the end we realize that he is also tracking down his wife, his mother, all women and men in the world, his own childhood, his country and his death. More than anything I think this Danish soldier, veteran of wars and exiles, seeks - like The Rebel
, by Albert Camus - a logical response to the apparent cruelty and senselessness of his life. Dinesen believes he is a completely rational and decent person, but his adventures and his reaction to what he sees, hears and feels during his journey are remarkably absurd. He is an anarchist in the closet, ready to come out, ready to die.
