Danish-American actor Viggo Mortensen has done a lot of notable things in his career, from achieving massive box office success in The Lord of the Rings trilogy to publishing numerous books of poetry and photography, recording music with guitarist Buckethead and even receiving the Knight's Cross of the Order of the Dannebrog.
But the one thing Mortensen hasn't done – until now – is speak Danish in a feature film.
The 56-year-old actor, who was born in New York to a Danish father and American mother, is starring in the upcoming film Jauja from Argentine filmmaker Lisandro Alonso. Mortensen plays Gunnar Dinesen, a Danish engineer who goes to Argentina in the late 19th century with his 15-year-old daughter, who then goes missing.
Mortensen himself spent part of his childhood in Argentina, so his role allows him the opportunity to display his multilingual chops, switching between Danish and Spanish.
Called a "hallucinatory head-trip" by Variety when it premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, Jauja hits theatres in a limited release on March 20th. It's currently unknown when it will make its debut on Danish screens.
